The tumbleweed 220 tumbling compost bin – an innovation in composting.
No more bins where you have to lift the bottom up and scrape some compost out with a fork, dripping compost water all over your feet. This bin allows you to simply pour your kitchen and garden waste in, tumble it over to aerate the contents, and get fresh compost out of either end with no fuss or bother.
- Innovative tumbling construction – allows for faster composting
- Vented lid at each end for ease of filling and emptying
- Injection moulded for greater strength and resistance
- Raised bin to discourage rodents and prevent nutrients seeping into ground
- Stable frame to provide strong support on unstable ground
The compost bin comprises a sturdy, 100% UV-protected recycled plastic and a powder-coated frame. A stainless steel breaker bar through the centre of the drum assists in the mixing of the contents. Vented lids at each end maintain aeration and allow easy access.
Aeration of the compost material in the bin is the key to speedy decomposition. Tumbleweed’s unique compost bin rotates around its axis through the width of the bin. Therefore, the contents fall from the top to the bottom of the bin as it is tumbled and are thoroughly aerated.
The breaker bar across the middle helps to break up the contents as they fall. Other tumblers rotate around an axis that runs through the length of the bin. When tumbled, the contents roll resulting in minimal aeration.

WHERE TO PUT YOUR COMPOST BIN
The compost bin should be situated in a sunny position as heat promotes the composting process. Place it in an accessible place so that it can be easily tumbled every few days. Put it near to where you will walk past it on the way to the car so you can give it a quick turn on your way out!
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO MAKE COMPOST?
To produce compost in four weeks, almost fill the compost tumbler and tumble every two to three days. During summer and the growing season, this is the most commonly used method. If you do not have sufficient material to initially fill the compost bin, just keep adding ingredients and tumble the compost bin over a period of time. It will take a further two weeks to produce compost after adding the last lot of material. This method is most commonly used in winter. The Tumbleweed Compost Bin can produce four loads of compost for every one produced by traditional methods.
HOW TO USE YOUR COMPOST
You can use the contents of your compost bin before they have completely broken down for mulching. At this stage, you will still be able to distinguish some of the ingredients. Besides the advantages already discussed, mulching will provide food for worms, thus attracting them to your garden. When your compost is dark brown and “earthy”, it is ready for use and may be dug into the garden or spread as a mulch on the surface. Digging into the garden improves the soil by adding humus and attracting worms. It will loosen heavy clay soils and enhance the water-holding capacity of sandy soils in particular.
Mulching thickly on the surface of your garden will:
- Reduce water evaporation by up to 80%
- Help to maintain a constant soil temperature, which reduces water usage
- Insulate the soil, keeping roots cool in summer and warm in winter
- Add nutrients to your soil
